6 Valentine’s Day Splurges We Can Get Behind

Even if you don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, February is the month of romance. Your local store is probably stocking up on roses and champagne, and everywhere you look, lipstick red hues are making their way to window displays.

Valentine's Day is upon us

Valentine’s Day is upon us

It’s enough warmth to melt even the hardest hearts. After all, who could say no to a dinner and movie up on a starlit rooftop or a little Gloucester lobster scramble in bed?

This year, here are some Valentine’s Day splurges we think are absolutely wonderful.

A romantic weekend away

Florence, Italy

Florence, Italy

On Valentine’s Day, most people think nothing could be more romantic than a bouquet of red roses. We agree but roses, no matter how perfect the blooms, wither away, as do chocolates. If you don’t have them, they will, by all means, decay. These are just symbols of Valentine’s Day, but a memorable experience…ah…that’s something that lasts forever.

In our book, that’s a weekend getaway, to a place that’s all about the romantic factor. Like Prague, with its buildings that come alive through their colours, shapes and little details. This time of year, the city is also particularly magical, covered in soft flakes and where the frosty mornings just call for freshly baked pastries and sizzling hot chocolate at Café Savoy.

Florence is another city made for romantic getaways with endless corners to explore and evenings filled with swirls of pasta pomodoro and Chianti classico. Then there are the golden sunsets on river Arno and stolen kisses in hidden town squares. But the most heart-melting factor of the city might just be standing on Ponte Santa Trinita, from which the views of Ponte Vecchio are just to be had. Peaceful, romantic and bathed in gold at sunset, for a proposal, this might just be the perfect spot.

A night of romance at the Mandarin Oriental, Boston

If you’re just looking for a romantic night, there are many hotels you can check into this time of year, but if you’re looking for some Daniel Boulud breakfast in bed the next morning, there’s only one: The Mandarin Oriental, Boston. Take some time out for a romantic getaway…the kind that starts with some Gloucester lobster scramble worth lingering over in the morning and a rose petal turndown service in the evening, complete with a perfectly chilled bottle of champagne and a chocolate dessert to share.

Even if you’re not a fan of Valentine’s Day, you can just use this as an inspiration to splurge on a long or impromptu weekend with your better half.

Take that trip to Morocco you always wanted

There's something otherworldly about Marrakech

There’s something otherworldly about Marrakech

Yes, we said it. How long have you had Morocco on your list of places to see? This year, take Valentine’s Day as an excuse to make that trip happen. From Casablanca to Marrakech via Fez, a trip to Morocco is always an adventure…the kind you’ll remember long after February is gone.

Mosques, markets, museums and traditional riads with tilework adorning the walls, tinkling fountains in leafy courtyards and colourful lamps, this is a country that feels frozen in a different time, and there is nothing quite as romantic.

From Paris with love

The City of Light or The City of Love, this time of year, there's no need to decide

The City of Light or The City of Love, this time of year, there’s no need to decide

Just a Cupid’s arrow away from the Champs-Élysées, Hôtel Plaza Athénée is offering the kind of romantic getaway you want in Paris. Think a picture-perfect room for two, with a balcony overlooking the Eiffel Tower and a bottle of champagne waiting on arrival.

The hotel is also home to five restaurants and bars, overseen by superstar chef Alain Ducasse. There is the fine-dining Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée and Le Relais Plaza, bathed in golden charm and a Parisian institution since 1936. On the last Wednesday of every month, the restaurant also hosts a jazz night, so if you want to bypass the February 14 fever and sway to jazz instead at a later date, you know what to do.

The Berkeley’s magical rooftop cinema

If you’re headed to London this Valentine’s Day, there’s a guarded winter secret we are going to let you in on. In London’s posh Knightsbridge neighborhood, there’s a hotel with the most romantic rooftop cinema: The Berkeley.

Can you imagine the thrill of bringing your loved one to an exclusive screening of When Harry Met Sally, high above Knightsbridge and Belgravia, overlooking the twinkling city below?

And if you’re worried about frozen fingers and toes, the hotel is way ahead of you with cozy seats, fluffy cushions, fleecy snug rugs and hot water bottles to keep you warm. And that bottle of complimentary Laurent Perrier Rosé Champagne and mugs of mulled wine should also work their magic.

For the Instagram lover

Santorini, Greece

Then, of course, there’s the kind of Valentine’s Day that goes above and beyond everything we mentioned so far…the kind that’s meant to stoke a budding relationship, rekindle a smoldering one or just show how much you truly care.

We are talking about Santorini.

With its stunning sunsets, dramatic vistas of blue and bone-white villages huddled on precarious cliffs, there’s no place on Earth with quite the same magnetic pull as the Greek island, and for a romantic getaway, especially with an Instagram lover, it’s a majestic setting.
