Spring Is Here; Who Else Could Use A Quick Beach Getaway?

Is it just us or did this winter have you craving for a warm weather getaway too? This year, instead of your usual go-to beach spots, consider flying a few extra hours to these sunny spring destinations with their perfect beaches, colorful marine life, lengthening days and resorts fit for royalty…

Essaouira, Morocco

Why now

This Moroccan town that juts out into the Atlantic like an island about to break free has always been a favorite retreat among surfers and musicians with its bohemian charm, languid rhythm and straight-off-the-ocean salty air that once inspired the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens. To this day, music- and culture- is high on the agenda in Essaouira, especially in June when the city plays host to the Gnaoua World Music Festival. That’s when the seaside town draws world-class jazz and classical musicians, and daytime temperatures reach about 30°C.

So if you’re looking to explore the town when it’s less crowded- and not quite so hot- spring is the best time to go.

Bed down

At the Heure Bleue Palais. This handsome riad, wedged within the rampart walls of Essaouira’s old town, is picture-postcard Moroccan with its open-air patio and rooms with dark-stained furniture and Napoleon III floor tiles. From here, the tangled alleyways of the Kasbah La Scala, and the teeming souks of the Medina are yours to enjoy any time of day, as is the coast with its biscuit-colored beaches just a little further out.

San Diego, California

Why now

Sunny San Diego is a magnet for hungry explorers looking to skip on the language barriers, and feast on tacos, tostadas, and some of the best beaches in the state. Around this time of year, the city also enjoys 12 to 13 hours of spring daylight, giving you plenty of time to explore its sandstone cliffs, immense Balboa Park or simply laze around on its beaches with their soft sand, great surf and clear water that stretches- almost without a break- from La Jolla to Del Mar.

In San Diego, there is nothing to do but enjoy yourself, the relaxed attitude of the city and the slow pace of life…

Bed down

At the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. This resort, set in the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve just north of San Diego, is a place where old-world design meets modern California lifestyle, and there is nothing quite like it. Think a palatial hotel with a Spanish Colonial Revival details of hand-stenciled ceilings, gold-leaf balusters and rooms outfitted with gilt mirrors and Empire-style furnishings, but outside, a velveteen golf course shares space with a stunning pool area featuring a white sand beach, vanishing edges, and private cabanas where you could easily spend all day lounging.

Mallorca, Spain

Why now

When it comes to holidays in Spain, everyone hits up destinations like Madrid and Barcelona. This spring, go rogue and explore one of the Mediterranean’s chicest places to be: Mallorca. Around this time of year, the weather is warm and wild flowers abound, but the crowds have not yet made it to the white-sand beaches and soaring mountains.

Mallorca is also a different side of Spain…one where dinners of barbecued fish are cooked up on the sand, and the port is filled with bobbing yachts.

Bed down

At the Park Hyatt Mallorca. This resort, just inland from the Mediterranean, on Mallorca’s quieter north-east coast, is that chilled-out refuge where time is irrelevant. Maybe it’s the architecture of the complex, styled like a traditional Majorcan village with clusters of honey-coloured buildings, or maybe it’s that gorgeous Mediterranean terrace overlooking the Canyamel valley, but life at the Park Hyatt Mallorca moves at a sleepy pace, and it’s a charming place to stay.
