The unmistakable chill of winter is in the air again. The mittens are out, thermostats are cranked up and snow shovels are strategically placed by the front door, ready for action.

You might be loving the weather. It’s the perfect excuse to get through that ever growing Netflix library and of course, nothing says Christmas like falling snow and hot cup of mulled wine.

But a white Christmas isn’t the only way to go. This holiday, a lot of people are choosing to go  lounging on a tropical beach, replacing hot chocolates with Mai Tai’s and scarves for bathing suits and sun tan oil.

But if you want to have your cake and eat it too, and get the best of both worlds, America is a destination that’ll have you ice skating in Times Square on one day and lounging on Sunset Beach the next. And, since we’ve already showed you a few nice places for a white Christmas, we’ve gone ahead and made a selection of some of Miami’s best family friendly suites  for something a little different during the festive season.

Eliminating all the annoying things about the Magic City (crowded beaches, questionable service etc…) these hotels will show you another side of one of the world’s most popular destinations.

St Regis Bal Harbour Resort

Tucked away on the northern end of Miami beach and a mere 15 minutes from all of South Beach’s high end shopping, the St Regis Bal Harbour puts a coconut oil smeared tick on the location checkbox.

The hotel sets the tone right from check-in, with a grandiose lobby that feels part parlor of luxury and comfort and part art/ design display that wouldn’t look out of place in nearby Art Basel.

St Regis Bal Harbour Resort

Home to an award winning remède spa, Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s J&G Grill and plush interiors by Yabu Pushelberg, the St Regis Bal Harbour Resort is, even by Miami standards, considered over the top… and that’s before you’ve even seen the suite.

St Regis Bal Harbour Resort Presidential Suite

If you want an exceptional luxury hotel experience, then book a lower category room and you won’t be disappointed.  But if you want to experience the St Regis going all out and delivering their vision of what a luxury apartment ought to be, the Presidential Suite, is exactly where you should be laying your bags down this holiday.

Set in 2,800 square feet of space, the Presidential Suite is bound to get a jaw drop out of the most jaded of luxury travel connoisseurs but with only two bedrooms available (max sleeping capacity of 4), it’s not as generous in size as others but it more than makes up for it in wow factor and quality.

Floor to ceiling windows flood the living area with natural light and you can soak in the majesty of the Atlantic’s cerulean blue ocean right from the comfort of your living room couch or the wraparound balcony’s Rattan chairs… it’s the kind of view that makes the entertainment area’s 70inch widescreen practically redundant.

St Regis Bal Harbour Presidential Suite 2

There’s a strong emphasis on privacy as well. The suite is only accessible via a private lift and even in the pool area, guests of the Presidential Suite are given exclusive access to a Presidential Cabana for complete seclusion. The possibility for in room dining comes courtesy of an 8 seater master dining room and a full chef’s kitchen staffed by the St Regis’s signature dedicated butler.

The suite is a modern masterpiece and delivers in the details as well. 400 thread count Pratesi bed linens, Remède spa amenities in the bathrooms, marble baths and a bedside touch screen panel from which every bit of the room’s technology can be controlled, make every aspect of your stay here, perfect.

Acqualina Resort & Spa

The Acqualina Resort is tucked away on Miami’s quiet (yes it’s possible) Sunny Isles Beach and offers a different side of the magic city; ideal for families with young ones or for those who just want to relax without any of the city’s usual fuss.

The Acqualina is generous in space offering large rooms, 4 swimming pools, a state of the art fitness center and America’s first ESPA spa services. To top it all off, the service is top notch and will make you feel like you’re glitterati, whether that’s the case or not.

Acqualina Suite

Families looking for space to let the little ones– or the adults– run around, will be absolutely spoilt for choice with the large rooms and suites on offer. But, for pure extravagance and a suite that could put your average beachside apartment to shame, the Deluxe Three Bedroom Ocean Front Hotel Suite is exactly what you want.

Located on the 35th floor of the hotel and offering guests 2,375 SQ of space, this the cream of the resort’s crop and it shows in every detail.

Acqualina Suite 2

The suite is crammed with so much technology that it could put the starship enterprise to shame, with high def tv’s, Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewers, the latest video game consoles and much more. Our only complaint, is that it constantly throws reasons to stay inside at you, when what you should actually be doing, is enjoying the view from your private balcony or enjoying one of the resort’s many swimming pools, but if you do want stay inside and relax you’re in for a treat.

The Setai

Drawing its inspiration from Art Deco and Asian zen designs, the Setai Miami is a 40 storey temple of relaxation that’s been coddling discerning travelers since the late 30’s and it’s easy to see why.

The Setai Courtyard terrace

Every inch of the Setai has been designed for privacy and tranquility. Teak walls and black granite shut out the outside world and chinese jade pieces accent the hotel’s zen atmosphere.

Ironically, even though Sunset Beach’s bars and shops are two minutes away, the Setai’s philosophy is as removed from Miami as it gets; and that’s exactly what its guests are after.

The Setai Penthouse Suite

Families in town for Christmas will be spoilt by the Penthouse suite’s four bedrooms, rooftop pool and legion of dedicated staff.

Available on request only, the Penthouse suite is ideal for families or individuals who don’t want to compromise on space. 10,000 sqm large and occupying the whole of the hotel’s 40th floor, the Penthouse is as good as it gets if you’re after the “home away from home” feel.

Easily able to hold its own against the best suites in the world, even the most seasoned of luxury travellers will leave with a sense of wonder.

Every aspect of the suite is blessed with expert attention and there’s evidently no cutting corners on luxury here. Sunbathing takes on a whole new dimension from the private rooftop terrace which comes with an infinity pool, jacuzzi , lounge area and bird’s eye view of Miami that is simply priceless.

The Setai Penthouse Suite Balcony

The four master bedrooms include two master suites and a kids media room, a welcome addition for parents who want to make the most of the peace and quiet of the terrace and the cherry on the cake, is a Steinway piano for the musos. It’s the very definition of Grand Luxury.
